DashingD3js.com Weekly Data Visualization and D3.js Newsletter

Hi Friends -

Welcome to the third issue of DashingD3js.com's Weekly Newsletter .

Onwards to this week's links...

Reading

  • D3: Data-Driven Documents
The Original Academic Paper (Very Readable) - Data-Driven Documents (D3) is a novel representation-transparent approach to visualization for the web.

  • HAL 9000 Soundboard with HTML5, D3.js, Canvas and HTML5 Audio
As a quick side project I decided to create an animated HAL 9000 using HTML5 Canvas, D3.js, and HTML5 Audio.

  • U.N. Development Agency Launches Open Data Site To Track All $5.8B In Projects
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the arm of the UN established in 1965 to help build up nations around the globe, on Thursday launched a new website, “Open.UNDP.org” showing exactly where and how it is spending the entirety of its $5.8 billion annual budget for 2011 around the globe.

  • D3.js Demo - Koalas to the Max
Koalas to the Max dot Com is a website where you scroll your mouse over coloured circles to split them up to a point where a recognisable image may be seen. In this case, it’s a koala… and who doesn’t love koalas?! (lovingly built with D3.js)

  • D3.js Demo - Trigonometry
The first thing that should be shown in any Trigonometry class, done in D3.js

  • Kitware Receives DARPA Funding to Develop a Visualization Design Environment
Kitware, a leading R&D solutions provider, today announces an award from DARPA XDATA funding to develop an innovative Visualization Design Environment (VDE), an open-source library of tools that will enable rapid development of large-scale data visualization interfaces by novice programmers. VDE will be developed through a collaboration between world-class visual interface and design experts from Kitware, KnowledgeVis, Stanford University, Harvard University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of Utah. The project will address how to ingest, transform, and visualize large quantities of data from a variety of sources, including formatted data records as well as free-form text documents.

  • D3-Bootstrap (Github project)
Twitter's Bootstrap is an awesome CSS framework with some really nice JavaScript tools. The problem with these tools, though, is that they rely heavily on jQuery, while d3 provides (approximately) 99% of the functionality they require.....I decided to start rewriting each of Bootstrap's tools from scratch and in a more d3-friendly style.

Jobs

  • Postdoctoral Fellow - Biological Data Visualisation (BioVis) : Sydney, Australia
The BioVis team focuses on applying principles of usability, data visualization and graphic design to develop state-of-the-art methods and tools that address cutting edge challenges in basic biological and biomedical research. A second focus of the lab is on using these methods to analyse experimental datasets, particularly in collaboration with groups at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.

  • Data Management Analyst - Carnegie Mellon University (USA)
The Member of the Technical Staff of the Center's Cyber Intelligence Team will be responsible for enabling the Intelligence Community and Industry to enhance cyber domain awareness, predict disruptions, as well as deter or defend against cyber anomalies and attacks.
